When was the last time you looked into your cat’s eyes and saw curiosity lighting you?

When was the last time you wrapped your arms around your dog and held the soft, warm, body against your stress tight chest?

When was the last time you let a cow’s long trusting tongue wrap around your worried hand?

When was the last time leaned your head against a horse’s flank and breathed in sweet grass sweat and sinew?

When was the last time you sat on the damp, autumn grass  and let the robin’s even-song call in purple twilight?

When was the last time you dipped your tired, worn toes into the ice-cold flash of silver-slipping stream?

When was the last time you stood bewildered beneath the diamond moon to watch her shadows dance?

When was the last time you rose at the pink haze of dawn as the mist lifts its bedtime blanket from the land?

When was the last time you let your keyboard numbed fingers feel into the grooves and ridges of an ancient trunk and let your body ease against its support?

When was the last time you followed the haze of rooks patterning the slate grey sky?

When was the last time your let an intestinal worm cross your life line before returning to the earth?

When was the last time you wondered at the dew bejewelled web of the morning spider?

When was the last time you let your hands drift over your imperfect flawed flesh to feel your ancestors’ and decendents’ bone beneath?

When was the last time you breathed in air and felt its blessing fill your lungs?

When was the last time you were truly aware?

Truly here?

Truly connected?

Truly alive?

When will it be the last time

for us all?
